Summative Position Statement

I am an illustrator, a 2D animator and a collage artist. Collages, shapes and textures are main elements of my illustrations. Frequently, I use digital or traditional collage using textures that I have made using paint, ink, pen, oil pastel etc.  I drew a lot of animals such as fishes, foxes, cats and crocodiles. Adobe suits are important on my practise because the techniques and processes require me to use these softwares.  I also have been involving myself with educational illustrations such as illustrations for text books, educational cards etc. This relates to my other strength which is 2D animation; conveying useful messages and knowledges to target audiences using moving image.

This August, I will fly back to Malaysia for good. I want to work for company, especially for a Television company. I have been applying jobs in Malaysia; I already got invited for some job interviews which will be in the late August or early September. The positions that I am applying for job are ‘Digital Designer/ Animation Designer/ Multimedia Designer’ and ‘Junior Graphic Designer/visuliser’ etc. This positions suits me very well because my strengths are layout, 2D animation, idea development and perhaps typography.  I also have been emailing television companies staffs and sending my CV, animated CV and website link but they have now reply yet.

My future career will be a lecturer. I would love to be a part time lecturer and a full time freelance illustrator or a part time lecturer and a part time working on a company. I enjoy teaching young adult  especially when they really passionate in art and I really love when people say thank you after I helped them in art.

Summative Evaluation

I mananged to create three professional online presence which are website, Vimeo and Instagram. went to a creative conference in London. I was so nervous but this leaded me onto two opportunities which was an internship and a studio visit in Malaysia. I realised something amazing will happen whenever I force myself to do something I am scared about. I am not very keen on using Linkedin.

I accomplished two internships last summer, in Malaysia and in the United Kingdom. This sort of lead me wanting to work for a company right after I graduate. I met a few practitioners, unfortunately I did not contact them ever since.

Thought bubble festival have gain my confidence in my design work. I always thought that nobody want likes my illustrations and would buy my art but during the festival, people keep saying how they love my work and keep drawing. Some of them followed me in Instagram.  Thought Bubble is also a platform for me to talk to other practitioners such as Isaac, Ben and Jake. They all illustrators from all over the UK. A simple 'Hello' and 'I love your work' can lead into a massive amazing conversation.

During Easter, I recreated my promo pack. I think it  is the strongest  promo pack that I have ever done because it is easy to post (not 3D like my previous design), easy to handle, cheap and quick to create. My promo pack contains my CV, a business card and sample of my works. The fact that I used contrast in colour for my promo pack (maroon and yellow) hopefully will stand out than any other illustrative promo pack.

One of the thing that I proud of for this module is I created an animated CV. To be honest, I did it last minutes; I did it the weekend before the final presentation. The 44 seconds animation took me less than 48 hours which is pretty amazing. I am proud to show it to my future client and I believe that the animated CV is very professional. (Even Emanuele Colombo, my favourite animator agreed with me)

My other strength for this module is my portfolio and presentation boards. I think my portfolio and presentation boards look professional in terms of layout and font. I think one of my strength in this industry is layout. Creating a portfolio have made me realised that I have done more work than I thought and I probably need to add few pages more for the end of year show.

I think my presentation went well, the fact that I did not rehearse and just read my note before the presentation. I think for the pass three years, I definitely have gain presentation skill. I think presenting infront of everybody is my second nature. Yes I got nervous at the very beginning but once I start talking, the nervous is gone.

I sort of left my blogging and contacting practitioners to the last minutes. This is because I don't know which practitioners to approach and I am lack of confidence of my practice. But I gathered strength and start contacting them during Easter break and some of them have replied and they love my work. This made me realised that professionals can be very friendly and they are willing to give advices to students. I wish I realised about this sooner.  My animated CV was not working during the presentation because the iMac does not have Wifi on (saved my animation on Vimeo). So next time, I just need to have the actual video ready and stop depending on the internet!

Peter Barber

I have been working with Peter Barber for one of the brief for OUIL603 - painting two gigantic wall in Leeds. Peter Barber in amazing. mage above shows a spray paint workshop. During the workshop, he taught me the very basic skill of spray paint.

This was my first time learning to spray paint. I got to admit, he is very good and spray paint is harder to control that I thought.

It quite difficult for the first time and I feel like leaning a new software at the end on my degree course.

I actually enjoy the technique even though it's quite challenging. I have been dreaming to spray paint and painting massive wall since I was in the first year.

I don't know if this will be my career in the future but I am enjoying this. I also have been emailing a staff from Bradford Beekeepers Association, they are calling an artist to paint their container (image below)

How exciting!

Elise Gravel.

Elise Gravel is one of my favourite illustrator. She draw a lot of characters and weird creatures. She is an author and an Illustrator, similar to Owen Davey.  She mainly use black and red for her monster which is pretty good combination.

The flat colour use reminds me  when I was in the first year, I used a lot of flat colour on illustrator. I wanted to contact her but I cannot find her e-mail address. Maybe I should message her on Instagram or Facebook or something.

Emanuele have replied my email.

He said my animated CV is good. (Happy time) and He is planning to go to Malaysia next Christmas. I imagine I probably will be working at company by then and maybe I can invite him to my company and show him around.

Few minutes later he replied back:
Hi Zatul.

I have been animating for 6 years now :)Thanks for your tips, but I come from Italy so I am already used to be careful ;)
Good luck with your work, speak soon!
E.

:) Thank you for getting back to me so soon!

Sent

Oh my god, I cannot believed that I actually had some courage to send an email to Emanuele Colombo as known as my inspiration or my favourite motion designer ! I hope he will reply soonnnnn.

Emanuele Colombo

These motion graphics are by Emanuele Colombo. He is a freelance motion designer. He is my main inspiration whenever I create my 2D animation. I can't believe that he use After Effect to create these animations because it so smooth compared to mine. I bet he have a lot of patience to deal with After Effect.

Maybe I should drop him an e-mail and ask for his opinion on my animated cv.

Astro Awani.

I visited to Astro Awani, a Malaysian TV station last september. So, I decided to send an email to one of the staff that I met and hopefully he can help me to get any suitable position for me.

Yeppie

I got a reply !

I got a reply from Ben ! I highlighted some key bits of the email.

Ben said 'Keep going to events and talking to creatives'. Hmm, I am not very good in starting conversation with a stranger unless I offer them my candy at the very first place then talk about illustration and stuff.

Thank you Ben for your wisdom statements. I will do my best to be a successful illustrator.

This is my reply

'Hello Ben,
Thank you for your wisdom statements T.T I will do my best and extra hard starting now until after I graduate.

Thank you again,
Zatul.'

Helen Dardik

Yey! I managed to send an email to Helen Dardik! I pray she will reply my email. I love her work so muchhhhhhhhh.

I follow her on Instagram! she draw all the time ! I love how she draw on the envelope everything someone buy a print off her. The animal characters  are amazingly beautiful ! I can tell that she did a lot of investigation on the animal's posture.

She is very good at painting. I really want to be as good as her. I mean I can do digital painting on Photoshop and Ai, I think I am lack of traditional media skill.

It is ok Zatul, it is never too late to learn.

Thought Bubble Friends.

Left: Yomi
Top right: Jake Lava
Top Left: Ben and Isaac
These are my of my designer friends that I made during Nov 2015 Thought Bubble. I remember ten from the Thought Bubble 2014 and surprisingly they remembered me. The funny moment is when I recognise their work but not their face and they seem to recognise me too because during the 2014 Thought Bubble, I was chatting with them for a while.

Designers in Thought Bubble can be so friendly ! They words are full of wisdom.I need to send them an e-mail. I shall look for their e-mail now.
