Chris Sasaki

  • It is okay to go back and forth inters of digital and traditional media
  • Bring personal experience in your project
I asked him four questions ( I cannot remember the last question)

1. Things that you regret
Ask people 'what should I do next' instead asking myself 'what do I really want to do as an artist'.
He suggested me to find a reason what are you doing it and before starting a project, ask yourself your intention and what do you want to learn from it.

2. How many people working on animation team
He said making an animation film divided into several team such as design team, technical team etc. and each team divide into smaller teams. For example design team divided into character design, fashion and clothing team, background team etc.

3. Who decided the movie tittle and storyline.
The heads of the team will decide.

A beautiful fish by Chris Sasaki. I love the textures and how he used a colour scheme for his illustration with the same texture. Maybe  should try something like that. This fish will look amazing on fabric as a pattern or on products like a cup, a iPad cover etc.

OUIL503 Evaluation

I think this module was completely different from the other modules in Illustration because I was to choose the briefs and the clients and, although I thought I had not done anything for OUIL503,  when I did my project report, I realised that I had done 14 or more live briefs which is a lot. These briefs enabled me to experiment with all sorts of art pathways and methods from pattern, packaging, fabric print to typography.

This module was also quite challenging because it was really open and it was up to the individual to decided how many briefs they wanted to work on at a time. This module taught me to be more independent and tested my time management skills. It taught me to be independent because everyone was answering different briefs and  I  could only get answers by interacting with the clients and the brief and I could not ask tutors because they had not designed the brief. Interacting with clients can be extremely challenging especially if they live far away from me or there are two clients (partners) in one project but they live far from each other and keep missing communication among themselves and blame me for designing wrongly even when I was following the idea of one of them.

After I completed my project report, I realised that I had made a lot of patterns and posters. I experimented with a lot of typography and repeated pattens. I enjoy making patterns for WrappedCo, Tiger Print and Unmasking The Truth etc but I found it was difficult to please myself as well as them. I think this is due to the fact that  I am not specialised in patterns. I am not very keen on typography but my live briefs involved this a lot. I do not know if I have improved on using time in design but I know that I have become more patient and aware of discipline in typography.

I did not finish off my YCN, Yorkshire Tea (individual practice) because I found it was hard and it did not appeal to me. At first I thought it would be fun but I was wrong. I think this is due to the lack of research and encouragement from peers and tutors and also I am not interested in packaging. For me, Yorkshire Tea was the most unsuccessful of the briefs. This is ashamed because I really like Yorkshire Tea. If I had more time I would love to restart my individual practice (YCN/D&AD) by reading briefs properly before making a decision. In contrast, I really enjoyed the collaborative project D&AD, Pantone brief with William. We managed to get everything done a few weeks before the deadline; I think this is because I had someone to push me to do design work which is good. We also set our mini deadlines and set our meeting times so we could get the design work finished on time. Sometimes we had to change our meeting times because of our personal matters and timetable.

I had to create a to do list most of the time as this module was overlapping with other modules. I really did have to plan my holiday especially during the Easter break as the deadlines for all the modules were approaching; the to do list technique and deactivating my Facebook did help me a lot. When I did my to do list, I realised that I was leaving all the blogging to the last minute, for example I did a live brief in November, and I still did not blog about it until Easter which is bad because I had probably already forgotten some of the experiences that I felt during the live brief.

At first OUIL503 was my least favourite module but as time passed by, I really enjoyed the module as I start to pick live briefs/competition that suited my interests rather than picking a live brief/competition just for the sake of it.

Idea for my promotion pack

I had a lot of ideas for my promo pack.

On my promotion pack, I wanted to include:-
1. My business card.
2. Artwork which I could put on a CD or a pen drive? or I could print in on an object like onto sticky notes, a cup's matt, buttons, postcards, desk calendar, bags, t-shirts.
3. CV ?

These are my sketches:-
1. A handprint t-shirt that have my artwork, a business card and a CD that have my artworks.

2. A pen drive that have my artworks and a business card.

After I had a long thought, these two ideas were not suitable with myself. This was due to the cost, which quite expensive and I don't have time to fabric print.

Now, I decided my promotion pack will be a small note book that I will bind that have my CV on the inside cover and a pattern on the outside cover. I will also include some stickers of my artworks, my business card and put all of these on an envelope which also have my pattern printed on it.

My pattern will be 'monsters' as I love to doodle little weird creatures.

New books !

I bought these two books for OUIL505 but these two books inspired me a lot not only for OUIL505 but my personal project and sketches. I bought these two books because I like the style of drawing.

Foxtly's Feast is a book by Owen Davey. We had a BigHeads with him (as I requested) and I decided to buy his book as I love the used of colours and his style of drawings. At the moment I am obsessing with trees and I love how he drew trees; I like some white outlines and the patterns that he used which suit with the target audience which is children.

Limelight Larry also a children's book. I like the tone of voice which is digital collage with some outlines as you knew I use this technique a lot too.

A poster.

I saw this when I was on my way home. I like the weary lines that the designer used as I never used weavy lines in my illustrations and maybe in the future I could try to use weavy lines.

I went into a fine art studio and I saw these lovely drawings (images above). I love the lines drawing and how the designer used dots to represent shades. I also fascination about the used of lines on the hair which reminds me of this (image below) but image below used different pattern for hair but image above only coloured some back on the hair.

Homemade skirt

These are some skirts that I sew after almost 9 months I left sewing as I sew a lot whenever I am in Malaysia. I really enjoy sewing and I would love to include sewing on one of my module in BAiL (Maybe in the future). This was my first time added a pocket to a skirt and I am so surprise that my sewing skill became more neat.

Sewing need a lot of patience and focus especially when I was deal with machines, scissors and needles.

Life's A Pitch

I think we were successful as a group because we all did our part and able to come at the meeting on time, apart from Kane. He missed some meeting and rehearsal because of his part time job.

I think by presenting in a group is easier because I only have to talk for a few minutes but the nervousness was extremely high. We, as a group rehearsed a lot and we rehearsed for 4 hours. We also got over worried about questions that might the audience would ask. But I had to go into a room in the library to rehearse my part because I was extra nervous because I think this PPP presentation is too formal but this was a good practice for my future career.

I am so into fabric print so I was more than happy to fabric print our t-shirts and tote bags. It did not take long, maybe the whole afternoon. Orlaith bought the t-shirts, so we all have to pay her £2.50 each.

We are so into our events and we are thinking of make it happen next year around october 2016. We already create twitter, instagram, email and Facebook account for Out of Lines !

Sewing time!

Sewing time !

I had my sewing induction few weeks ago and now I am making some skirts for myself and my friends.
